2021 Holiday Season

Nov 12, 2021

It is hard to believe that November has arrived, and the Winter Holiday celebrations are right at our doorstep. Throughout the year, our communities have welcomed new residents, both from within the state and others who have migrated here and are now part of our amazing hometown communities. We would love to share with our friends and neighbors (both old and new) all the spectacular events in our very own backyards.

Prescott & Prescott Valley

December 4 - Approximately 32 years ago Prescott was named “The Christmas City” and no doubt it lives up to its reputation. The festivities in America’s Christmas City keep their momentum as we celebrate with the 39th Annual Christmas Parade & 67th Annual Courthouse Lighting. What a fun and unique event this will be as the day begins at 1:00pm on Saturday December 4th. Children and adults alike will marvel in the magical experience of Christmas and will be held captive to the sounds and sights of the music, floats, and Holiday cheer. Finish the evening as you watch the courthouse come to life with the lightening ceremony beginning at 6pm.

December 10 - Prescott is fortunate to be blessed with unique and talented musicians and we celebrate this in many ways, but none that compare to J.S. Acker Night. This special evening pairs many of the downtown businesses with dedicated and hardworking musicians, who donate their time and talent with the combined goal to keep music thriving for the young people of our community. Come stroll with us through the streets, shops, and restaurants on Whiskey Row as you revel in the sound of the music. December 10th is a night you will not want to miss!

Thanksgiving – December 30 - Drive through a one-mile display of holiday lights at Prescott Valley’s Valley of Lights. Fain Park is lit up nightly from Thanksgiving – December 30th. The Holiday spirt fills the air as you look out to spectacular display of lights at this loved annual event.

December 31 - Mark your calendars for a fun and exciting year end event, say goodbye to 2021 and hello to a new year with the 10th Annual Whiskey Row Boot Drop! This event takes place at The Palace Saloon, which lowers a 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot from a 40-foot flagpole. Dress warm and expect to have a unique and exciting night filled with food, fire dancers, promotional giveaways and much more. The boot drops at 10pm and again at midnight.

Wickenburg

Just sixty miles outside of Prescott is one of our neighboring communities, Wickenburg. Here the Holiday spirit and charm resonates everywhere.

December 3 - 4 - For a quieter evening, make plans to attend the 32nd Annual Cowboy Poetry Reading December 3rd-4th. December 3rd will be the beer and wine reception held at The Desert Caballeros Western Museum. Here you will get a taste of the main event which will be held the following night at the Wickenburg Community Center on December 4th.

December 10 - The Holiday spirt is alive and well in Wickenburg and the Annual Christmas Parade of Lights is back! On December 10th at 6:30pm this event is a must see, and make sure to add shopping and dining to your schedule. We suggest you have your Christmas list with you so you can bring Christmas home from Wickenburg. After the parade, dining and shopping take a few extra minutes to drive through the neighborhoods and view the delightful Christmas light displays.

Tubac

Let us not forget our friends in Tubac, just sixty miles south of Tucson. This quaint historic town is known as a world-renowned artist destination.

November 26 - 28 - Welcome to the very first Black Friday in Tubac. This event held November 26th through the 28th will offer up fantastic opportunities to visit one of the unique art galleries with displays from both local and visiting artist. Also, take advantage of your time here, weave your way into the unique shops for unique and eclectic gift options.

December 3 - 4 - Join the festivities as the entire village lights up on December 3rd & 4th. On this date Tubac celebrates their traditional Luminaries. There will be something for everyone – treats, shopping, live music, much more, and of course Santa for the kids. Stores are open late so bring your list and get ready to embrace an evening of fun and community. Make your Holiday special with an incredibly unique and extraordinary experience in Tubac.

With festivities continuing throughout the month of December, there’s always something to experience in Arizona towns we call home. The coming weeks are filled with live performances, holiday themed music, and even a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. At Dorn Homes careful consideration goes into every design and building choice. You can see it in our award-winning architecture and our extensive design options. One place that you can’t see it is in the air itself. Every home that Dorn Homes builds is guided by a promise that we make to each and every homebuyer. We call that promise The Organic Home . The Organic Home is a commitment to provide a safe and healthy indoor environment for you, your family, and your pets. When we build, we use whole home ventilation systems, low or no volatile organic compound (VOC) materials, and healthy home building techniques. In fact, Dorn Homes is one of the first homebuilders to receive the EPA’s Indoor airPLUS certification. This means that, in addition to offering ENERGY STAR Certified Homes , we take extra steps in the design and construction of our homes to protect them from moisture and mold, pests, combustion gases, and other airborne pollutants. The reason this is so important to us is that Indoor Air Quality can have real health effects in both the short and long term. While we do our part building to the highest Indoor Air Quality standards, here are a few steps you can take to breathe a little easier. Determine if There’s a Problem While there are tests you can purchase to measure your air quality and the presence of mold and radon, those may not be necessary in all instances. The EPA recommends a simple smell test to determine if you may have trouble with your Indoor Air Quality. Step outside for a few minutes and then go back inside, a musty or unpleasant odor is a good indication that you may need to address your air quality. Vent, Vent, Vent The most effective method for handling poor Indoor Air Quality is improving ventilation. You can do this through natural or mechanical means. At Dorn Homes every home is built with a mechanical whole home ventilation system, but if you find yourself needing a higher volume venting (when painting or cooking for instance) it’s as easy as opening a few windows. Opening windows on opposite sides of the house is a great way to naturally vent the home and encourage airflow. Clean the Air There are far too many air purifiers to discuss the benefits of each one, but you really only need to know a few numbers to make a decision. How much air flows through the purifier and how efficient it is. A higher efficiency translates to more allergens captured while high airflow (measured in cubic feet per minute) means more air is cleaned. Ideally you want a purifier that is both efficient and has a high airflow. If you’re considering buying an air purifier, compare various models based on those two factors. Plants? There have been some studies that have found indoor plants improve Indoor Air Quality and other studies that have found that having plants in your living spaces offer a psychological benefit while reducing stress. Be careful not to overwater them though, wet soil can lead to moldy soil. Maintenance Maintenance means both controlling sources and managing exposure. The EPA recommends source control as the most important step in managing Indoor Air Quality. That means, removing sources of harmful pollutants or allergens, things like old drywall or cabinets, high VOC paint, or houseplants that have caused an allergic reaction. If you are dealing with high VOC paints or building materials, the solution could be as simple as a new coat of paint. Many companies now make VOC blocking paints that are not only affordable, but also effective at improving Indoor Air Quality and indoor odor. If allergens are more of a concern, installing highly rated air filters in your ventilation system is an excellent investment (make sure you’re changing them according to the manufacturer’s instructions). Dorn Homes installs high-quality Merv-10 filters in every home we build. Additionally, cleaning your vacuum’s filter can help ensure that when you’re cleaning your home you’re not inadvertently filling the air with irritating dust and dander. If you’re interested in more information on Indoor Air Quality or the Indoor airPLUS Certification, you can read about it on the EPA’s website here.
